Lune’s Journey in Crafting Energy-Efficient, Durable, and Simplified Wearable Devices

Lune is a company based in Auckland, New Zealand which specalizes in embedded hardware and software development for wearable devices. When we started developing our tracker, Navee, our aim was to create a product that is energy efficient, durable, and simple. Whilst we are working on finalising the details, we thought we’d introduce you to where we are at so far.

Conclusions

Scaling Teams: Embracing Agile Growth

One of the most important things we took away from this project was learning to manage a larger team consisting of both internal (employees) and external (contractors) team members. The challenges of managing a team grow exponentially with the number of team members, so we transitioned to agile development throughout the project, as the team grew.

LoRa in IoT Technology

We also learned to manage and mitigate risks better, and this helped us make the right design decisions. For example, at the start of the project, we considered various competing IoT technologies, such as Sigfox vs LoRa. We ended up using LoRa, because with SigFox we rely purely on existing network coverage, whereas with LoRA it’s possible to install your own gateways to add network coverage.This ended up being a key part of our project as SigFox network coverage would not have been sufficient to enable exciting use cases such as hiking or pet tracking.

Agile Adaptation: Navigating Challenges and Solutions Amidst the Covid Pandemic

Another important lesson we took away was the importance of being able to quickly adapt to changing markets and circumstances. The Covid pandemic brought us a lot of challenges,which required us to quickly find solutions to on-going problems to minimize delays.

The extended battery duration enhances the device’s dependability, ensuring that you can trust it to function consistently over extended periods without the need for frequent recharging.

An inherent advantage of our tracking device is its independence from traditional phone signal networks. This feature proves invaluable when navigating areas with limited or no coverage, as our device enables you to send your emergency location even in remote locations. This capability ensures peace of mind, knowing that you can reach out for assistance when needed, regardless of your location.
